Quantum Tomato Concentrate With Lycopene
The next super food I want to discuss is also another favorite of mine that I try to include in everything I eat. They’re round and red, soft and juicy. They are consumed in diverse ways including raw, as an ingredient in many dishes and sauces, and even in drinks. Botanically it’s considered a fruit, but is refered to as a vegetable by most people. If you haven’t figured it out yet, this post is about tomatoes! Although I love the taste of tomato, the real reason this fruit has caught my attention is because it is so rich in lycopene and carries a laundry list of health benefits.
Tomatoes are eaten throughout the world, and their consumption is believed to benefit the heart, pancreas, and prostate, among other organs. They are very rich in Vitamin C, A, and K. Tomato and tomato derived products are the richest source of the carotene lycopene, one of natures most powerful antioxidants. In recent years, lycopene in tomatos has been given the spotlight by the food science and phytonutrient research community. This exciting phytonutrient has been repeatedly studied in humans and has proven to be protective against a growing list of cancers including:
- Head and Neck
In addition to being a giant in cancer prevention, lycopene has also been shown to:
- Protect against oxidative damage, heart disease, and osteoporosis
- Assists in the repair of damaged body cells
- Carry helpful metabolic effects
- Possibly be protective against neurodegenerative diseases
- Improve the skin’s ability to protect against harmful UV rays
- Protect the eye from age-related macular degeneration and improve eye health
While lycopene plays an important role in tomatoes’ health benefits, it is not the only nutrient that makes tomatos so healthy to eat. Similar to a multivitamin, tomatoes poses a synergistic effect from all of the nutrients packed into them. You can achieve other great synergistic effects by combining tomatoes with other things in your diet like the last super-food I wrote about, broccoli or green tea. These two vegetable super-foods that are separately recognized for their cancer-fighting capabilities are even more successful against cancer when working as a team, shows a study published in Cancer Research. “When tomatoes and broccoli are eaten together, we see an additive effect. We think it’s because different bioactive compounds in each food work on different anti-cancer pathways,” said John Erdman, Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois. Regular consumption of both green tea and foods rich in lycopene result in a synergistic effect against prostate cancer, stronger than the protection afforded by either, researchers have noted.
As usual, if you don’t eat tomatoes for whatever reason, I have the perfect solution:
